A practical guide to transporting ozone gas for insufflations

Transport Ozone

Do you have a friend or family member who is interested in trying ozone therapy? If they don’t have a local practitioner or would rather do ozone at home, it is possible to use your own ozone equipment to bring ozone gas directly to them. In this article, I will go over how anyone with an ozone generator can transport ozone without the need to move all of the equipment.

Once ozone gas is created it does not last long and quickly loses 50% of its concentration after 20 minutes at room temperature. This breakdown process can be slowed by simply cooling the gas. You can do this with a small cooler filled with ice, leaving enough room for your inflated insufflation bag(s).

On average the air temperature inside a cooler with ice will fall between 35 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees provide enough cooling power to help slow down the breakdown of ozone.

There are three factors that you must consider when filling an insufflation bag for transportation.

  • What ozone concentration to fill the bag?
  • How long will transport take?
  • What ozone concentration does the end-user need?

Below is a chart that outlines the loss in ozone concentration over time while in a cooler filled with ice***.

Note: Ozone concentration may vary +/- 10%

Reading the numbers

You will notice that the largest decrease in ozone concentration happens from the start to the 30-minute mark. This is because the ozone is in the cool-down process. Once the ozone cools down you will notice that every 30 minutes you see, on average, a 20% decrease in concentration.

Most insufflations call for an ozone concentration between 20 and 40 gamma. If your trip will take two hours, you can fill your bag with 70 gamma ozone and your friend or family member will receive 27 gamma ozone when you arrive.

With this information, you can properly transport ozone gas and know the correct ozone concentration when you arrive at the final destination.

***Equipment used: Ozone concentration was verified using a Teledyne 454 ozone gas analyzer. The insufflation bag used was the Promolife 750ml multi-chambered insufflation bag. The cooler used was a small 9.4-liter Igloo cooler filled halfway with ice.
