Easy foods for your immune system

salmonGiving the immune system a boost is important in any season or location. One of the easiest ways to help combat colds and illnesses is to eat the right foods. Some foods tend to have a greater impact for immunity than others, so here are some you might want to consider keeping on hand.

Berries: Vitamin C is easy to find in berries, which is believed to help prevent cell injury, among other things. Darker berries have bioflavanoids that can attack free radicals. So a good dose of mixed berries is a great snack for anyone.

Five healthy foods you can grow at home from scraps

pineappleThere are a lot of healthy plants you can grow from scraps, saving money and allowing you to collect good food for the future.  Here’s a list of some of the most popular.

Pineapples

Save the green top and remove any remaining fruit, either by twisting off the crown or cutting off the top and scraping the fruit out.  Start cutting small horizontal pieces off until you see the root buds.  Next peel off a couple layers of leaves from the base and put the cut side into a container of warm water.  Once it starts to root just replant it in soil and water it every week.  It takes a couple years to have pineapples ready to harvest but it will be worth it in the end.

Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes

If you have potato scraps with the eyes growing on them, chop those scraps into pieces about twi squ...

Five more herbs to plant or harvest in the Spring

EchinaceaIn our last blog we went over five healthy, popular herbs to plant in the spring and promised five more.  Here they are:

Echinacea:  Coneflower, also known as echinacea, is often used for infections given its immune support properties.  Many use tinctures for sore throats, tooth aches, canker sores and gingivitis, or a lotion for cuts, psoriasis, sores and more.

Echinacea needs sun that is fertile and dry and the roots shouldn’t soak for long periods of time.  The best time to plant is as soon as your soil can be worked and a couple more freezes are expected or possible.  Make sure to keep weeds from taking over until the plants are established.  They don’t bloom the first year but the next summer you can harvest the flowers.  Roots can be harvested in the fall.

Stinging nettles:  S...

Chamomile:  Very popular in teas, it’s gentle and has a pleasant taste.  It may have a calming effect and is often used to soothe the digestive and nervous system, as well as for colic, headaches, tension, insomnia and general aches and pains.  It has anti-inflammatory properties too, which leads some to use it for acne, ulcers, sore throats and more.

Chamomile enjoys sandy soil and being in the sun.  Be on the lookout for aphids, and you can collect the flowers after they are fully bloomed.

Garlic:  Garlic is considered antimicrobial and is...
