Who are we? Promolife has been in business since 1999, when we decided to offer natural products to promote a healthier lifestyle. “Thanks for taking care of me. I absolutely appreciate it. Sorry to say, I tried to order from one of your competitors first. It turned out to be a pretty bad experience. I confess that I was a little gun shy ordering from you. How Do Ozone Generators Work?
A Guide to
Ozone Generator Technology
Not all ozone generators are created equal. Two machines can look similar on the outside and work completely differently on the inside.
So what's actually happening inside an ozone generator? And what separates a great one from the rest?
Let's take a look.
How Ozone Is Made
Oxygen molecules (O2) are made of two oxygen atoms bonded together. To make ozone (O3), you need energy to split some of those molecules apart. The loose oxygen atoms then bond with other O2 molecules to form O3.
Every ozone generator does this. The difference is how it supplies that energy.
The Main Types of Ozone Generation
Corona Discharge
Corona discharge is the most common method used in ozone therapy generators. Oxygen passes through an electrical field inside the ozone cell, which splits oxygen molecules and forms ozone.
Corona discharge can produce the high, adjustable concentrations that ozone therapy applications call for. You may also see generators marketed as "cold plasma." These use a variation of the same principle.
Electrolysis
Electrolytic generators create ozone directly in water by passing an electric current through it. There's no oxygen source needed. It's ideal for making ozonated water, which is exactly how our EZO3 works.
Why the Ozone Cell Matters
The ozone cell is where ozone is made, and it's the most important part of any generator. Two things matter most:
1. What it's made of
Ozone is a powerful oxidizer, so the cell has to be built from materials that can handle it. Promolife generators use ceramic ozone cells, which are just as ozone-resistant and pure as glass without the potential burnout. Every Promolife cell carries a lifetime warranty.
2. How much heat it produces
Heat breaks down ozone, so a generator that runs hot loses some of the ozone it just made. Promolife generators use cold corona technology, which produces ozone without the heat that degrades it. The result is more consistent output.
Why Ozone Therapy Generators Use Pure Oxygen
Ozone therapy generators are designed to run on high-purity oxygen, not room air. Room air is only about 21% oxygen. Most of the rest is nitrogen, which can form unwanted byproducts in the ozone cell.
Feeding your generator high-purity oxygen means cleaner ozone, higher concentrations, and more accurate output.

Why Not Use a Room Ozone Generator?
It's one of the most common questions we hear: "Can't I just use the same kind of ozone generator people use to clear odors or treat a moldy basement?"
No, and here's why. Room ozone generators and ozone therapy generators are built for completely different jobs:
| Room Ozone Generator | Ozone Therapy Generator | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Treating empty rooms, cars, and spaces | Delivering ozone through tubing to accessories |
| Oxygen supply | Room air (about 78% nitrogen) | High-purity oxygen |
| Byproducts | Nitrogen byproducts mixed into the output | Clean ozone from pure oxygen |
| Materials | Not designed for direct ozone delivery | Ozone-resistant throughout, from cell to fittings |
| Output | Not measured or adjustable for specific applications | Measured in µg/mL and adjustable |
It comes down to two things: the materials inside and the purity of the oxygen going in. A room
generator isn't built for either.
Important: Room ozone generators are made for unoccupied spaces. Never run one in a room with
people or pets present.
How Output Is Controlled
Ozone concentration is measured in gamma (µg/mL), and two things control it:
- The generator setting. Adjustable models like the O3Elite Single, Dual, and O3Arc let you dial in your concentration.
- Your oxygen flow rate. Lower flow rates produce higher concentrations, because the same ozone output is spread across less oxygen.
That's why every Promolife generator comes with a gamma chart showing your concentration at each setting and flow rate.
What to Look for in an Ozone Generator
✔ Ozone-resistant construction throughout, not just the cell
✔ An oxygen-fed design for pure, high-concentration ozone
✔ Cold ozone production with no heat degrading the output
✔ Adjustable concentration for different applications
✔ A gamma chart so you know exactly what you're producing
✔ A strong warranty on the cell
✔ Real support when you need help
The Promolife Lineup
Every Promolife generator is built with ceramic cold corona cells, ozone-resistant parts, and luer lock connections. Each is made in the USA and checked by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of ozone generator is best for ozone therapy?
Oxygen-fed corona discharge generators, since they produce the high, adjustable concentrations ozone
therapy applications need.
Can I use a room or basement ozone generator for ozone therapy?
No. Room generators run on air, which is mostly nitrogen, and aren't built with ozone-resistant materials
for direct delivery. Ozone therapy generators use high-purity oxygen and ozone-resistant parts
throughout.
What is cold corona discharge?
A way of producing ozone without the heat that breaks it down, resulting in more consistent output.
Why do ozone generators need oxygen instead of air?
Room air is mostly nitrogen, which can form unwanted byproducts. High-purity oxygen produces cleaner,
more concentrated ozone.
Why does a lower flow rate increase ozone concentration?
The ozone produced is spread across less oxygen, so each milliliter contains more ozone.
The technology inside your generator matters. A well-built ozone cell, cold ozone production, and
ozone-resistant parts are what separate a reliable generator from the rest.
