A Deep Dive Into Ozonated Water

Who are we? Promolife has been in business since 1999, when we decided to offer natural products to promote a healthier lifestyle. “Thanks for taking care of me. I absolutely appreciate it. Sorry to say, I tried to order from one of your competitors first. It turned out to be a pretty bad experience. I confess that I was a little gun shy ordering from you. But, you proved to be very professional.” - Aileen

A Deep Dive Into Ozonated Water

Ozonated water is one of the simplest ways to use ozone.

Two Ways To Produce Ozone Water

It's also one of the most misunderstood.

How much ozone is in it?
How do you measure it?
How long does it last?
And how do you get the most out of your equipment?

We ran our own tests to find out. Here's everything you need to know.

Two Ways To Make Ozonated Water

There are two main methods for making ozonated water at home: bubbling and electrolysis.

Method 1: Bubbling (Oxygen-Fed Ozone Generator)

Method 2: Electrolysis (EZO3)

Method 1

This is the most common method. It uses an ozone generator, an oxygen source, and a water bubbler.

Ozone gas flows from your generator into the bubbler, where a glass diffuser at the bottom breaks it into fine bubbles. As they rise, some of the ozone dissolves into the water. The ozone that doesn't dissolve exits the top of the bubbler, ideally into an ozone destruct.

Bubbling produces the highest concentrations and handles larger batches. It's also the method we used in the tests below.

Method 2

Electrolysis creates ozone directly in the water. An electric current passes through the water via an electrolytic cell, which produces ozone right where it's needed. There's no oxygen tank, generator, or tubing involved.

The EZO3 is Promolife's electrolysis device, built to make ozonated water as simple as possible:

  • Fast: 3-minute cycles
  • Concentration: Up to 2 PPM in one cycle, or up to 2.75 PPM with a second cycle
  • Distilled water only: It's designed for zero-mineral water, which means fewer byproducts and less mineral buildup
  • Portable: It holds up to 8 oz, charges via USB-C, and fits in a bag
  • Ozone-resistant materials: Only glass, 316 stainless steel, and a platinum-titanium alloy cell come in contact with the water

Bubbler or EZO3: Which Is Right for You?

Bubbler + Ozone Generator EZO3
Method Ozone gas bubbled into water Electrolysis
Oxygen source needed Yes No
Max PPM 10+ PPM Up to 2.75 PPM
Batch size 500–2000ml Up to 8 oz
Time 10–30 minutes 3 minutes
Portability Home setup Take it anywhere
Best for Higher concentrations, larger batches, multiple ozone applications Quick, simple ozonated water at home, work, or on the road

Already have an ozone generator? A bubbler is the natural next step.
Just want ozonated water with no setup? The EZO3 is the easiest way to get it.

Gamma vs. PPM: How Ozone in Water Is Measured

This is where most of the confusion starts. There are two different measurements, and they measure two different things:

  • Gamma (µg/mL) measures the ozone gas coming out of your generator.
  • PPM (parts per million) measures how much ozone has actually dissolved into the water.

Since some ozone always escapes out the top of the bubbler, you can't convert gamma directly into PPM. Running your generator at 100 gamma doesn't make your water 100 PPM. Flow rate, concentration, water volume, and time all affect the final result.

Our Test Results

We tested how much ozone dissolves into water using the bubbler method at different flow rates, concentrations, and times.

Test conditions: Distilled water (0 TDS) starting at 0 PPM, at room temperature (70–71°F). We used a borosilicate glass bubbler with a medium-coarse fritted glass diffuser. PPM was measured with an ATI Q45 ozone water analyzer and a Chemetrics SAM I-2019.

500ml of water

Flow Rate Generator Output 10 Minutes 20 Minutes
1/4 LPM 33 µg/mL 2.7 PPM 5.3 PPM
1/4 LPM 56 µg/mL 4.5 PPM 7.1 PPM
1/8 LPM 52 µg/mL 6.4 PPM 8.1 PPM
1/8 LPM 75 µg/mL 8.5 PPM 10.3 PPM
1/16 LPM 63 µg/mL 6.6 PPM 8.6 PPM
1/16 LPM 100 µg/mL 7.5 PPM 9.7 PPM

1000ml of water

Flow Rate Generator Output 10 Minutes 20 Minutes
1/2 LPM 32 µg/mL 4.7 PPM 5.2 PPM
1/4 LPM 56 µg/mL 5.4 PPM 6.6 PPM
1/8 LPM 75 µg/mL 6.6 PPM 8.3 PPM
1/16 LPM 100 µg/mL 7.4 PPM 8.6 PPM

2000ml of water

Flow Rate Generator Output 20 Minutes 30 Minutes
1/2 LPM 32 µg/mL 4.6 PPM 5.2 PPM
1/4 LPM 56 µg/mL 5.1 PPM 6.6 PPM
1/8 LPM 75 µg/mL 5.6 PPM 7.5 PPM
1/16 LPM 100 µg/mL 5.4 PPM 7.2 PPM

These results are approximations. Water temperature, water quality, and small variations between glass diffusers (typically less than 5%) can all affect your final concentration.

What The Tests Tell Us

  • Lower flow rates win. 1/8 and 1/16 LPM consistently produced the highest PPM.
  • Max out your generator. Higher settings saturate the water faster.
  • More time means more ozone, especially for larger batches.
  • Bigger batches need longer. Plan on 10–20 minutes for 500–1000ml and 20–30 minutes for 2000ml.

How Long Does Ozonated Water Last?

We tested how much ozone dissolves into water using the bubbler method at different flow rates, concentrations, and times.

Test conditions: Distilled water (0 TDS) starting at 0 PPM, at room temperature (70–71°F). We used a borosilicate glass bubbler with a medium-coarse fritted glass diffuser. PPM was measured with an ATI Q45 ozone water analyzer and a Chemetrics SAM I-2019.

Temperature matters most. The warmer the water, the faster ozone breaks down:

Water Temperature Half-Life
59°F (15°C) 30 minutes
68°F (20°C) 20 minutes
77°F (25°C) 15 minutes
86°F (30°C) 12 minutes
95°F (35°C) 8 minutes

At room temperature, use ozonated water within 5–10 minutes.

Does Chilling Help?

Yes! Chilled water holds ozone roughly twice as long. Even so, at 58°F, ozone still dropped to about 1/4 of its starting concentration after an hour and about 1/8 after 90 minutes. If you store ozonated water in the fridge, re-ozonate it before use to bring it back up.

Prefer room-temperature water, or have sensitive teeth? Drink or use it within 5–10 minutes and you're not missing out.

"But I can still smell ozone..."

You might leave ozonated water in the fridge for hours, or even days, and still smell ozone. That doesn't mean much is left. Your nose can detect ozone at extremely low levels (around 0.005 PPM), so a faint smell isn't a reliable sign of how much ozone remains.

Tips for the Best Ozonated Water

✔ Use distilled or filtered water
✔ Set your oxygen to 1/8 or 1/16 LPM
✔ Run your generator at its highest setting
✔ Ozonate for 10–20 minutes (longer for larger batches)
✔ Use it within 5–10 minutes at room temperature
✔ Chill it if you need it to last longer
✔ Use a destruct to handle excess ozone

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between gamma and PPM?

Gamma measures the ozone gas from your generator. PPM measures how much ozone has actually
dissolved into the water.

How much ozone can I get into water at home?

In our testing, 500ml of distilled water reached over 10 PPM in 20 minutes at 1/8 LPM with a generator
set to 75 µg/mL.

What flow rate is best for ozonated water?

1/8 or 1/16 LPM, with your generator on its highest setting.

Can I make ozonated water without an oxygen tank?

Yes. The EZO3 uses electrolysis to create ozone directly in distilled water, with no oxygen source or
ozone generator needed.

How much ozone does the EZO3 produce?

Up to 2 PPM in one 3-minute cycle, and up to 2.75 PPM with a second cycle.

How long does ozonated water last?

At room temperature, ozone's half-life in water is about 15–20 minutes, so use it within 5–10 minutes.
Chilled water lasts about twice as long.

Why does my stored ozonated water still smell like ozone?

Your nose can detect ozone at tiny levels. A faint smell doesn't mean much ozone remains.

Ozonated water is simple to make and easy to get right once you understand the basics. Use the right
settings, make it fresh, and enjoy it quickly.
