Magnetic water conditioners place a magnetic charge into the water suspending the minerals (notably Calcium Carbonate) and prevents them from sticking to your pipes and hot water tank without the use of chemicals such as salt or potassium. Magnets will also clean out any build-up you may already have in your home's pipes. You will also use less soap.
Widely used in Europe since the 1940's to prevent scale build up in hot water boilers and now widely used in Industry to keep pipes from producing scale build up. (You will never see a salt water softener in a large manufacturing facility - they use magnets)
Promolife offers 2 types of magnetic water softeners: The Sophtec Non-Electric Magnetic Water Softener and Enprotec Electronic Water Softener
Typically with both units we can treat up to and over 40 grains or 685 ppm, and even higher depending on the water quality using magnetic technology. 20 grains is considered high, 10 grains is considered average.
Changing grains to ppm
grains x 17.1 = ppm
ppm divided by 17.1 = grains
Scale on water pipes is a coating or precipitate deposited on pipe surfaces. The most common form of scale is calcium carbonate. Scale is most visually evident as hard white deposits which build up in faucets, shower heads, toilets, bath tubs, glassware in residential houses and in commercial use such as coffee and ice makers, and in industrial use such as cooling towers, boilers, heat exchangers and evaporators. Many billions of dollars are lost due to equipment failure or replacement caused by scale buildup. Even iron build-up is minimal with magnetic water softeners due to the fact that iron easily adheres to scale and with reduced scale, you have reduced iron.
There are two types of magnetic water softeners
1) Electronic water softener units are composed of a signal cable that is wrapped several times around the pipe and an electronic unit that sends out a complex, dynamic current to produce extremely small, time-varying oscillating fields inside the pipe. The current that produces an oscillating field is known as Ampere's Law. An electronic water softener's signal produces a unique square wave current that sweeps all the frequency responses from 1,000 - 12,000 Hz at a rate of 20 times a second. When the strength of the oscillating field varies with time and changes direction, an induced current is produced inside the pipe, a phenomenon known as Faraday's Law of Induction.
2) Permanent Magnets work the same way but do not need to be connected to an electric current. Angles and strength will determine the effectiveness of permanent magnets.
When the strength of the oscillating field varies with time and changes direction, an induced current is produced inside the pipe, a phenomenon known as Faraday's Law of Induction. As the induced electric field oscillates, all particles which have an electrical charge are affected by the induced field.
This causes the unstable mineral ions to precipitate or collide with each other to the point where the calcium carbonate crystals grow until they become so large that there are no more surface charges left to stick to the pipe walls. These calcium molecules precipitate into an aragonite form and flow through the system. As a byproduct of this "snowball" effect, freed water molecules become available to remove existing scale, molecule by molecule.
