A conventional sauna heats the air in the chamber to a very high temperature, which in turn heats the body. Far infrared saunas works differently. Neither oxygen molecules nor nitrogen molecules in the air can block the far infrared (FIR) wave; therefore, the unique far infrared wave penetrates directly into the body a couple of inches.
