How Does a TENS (Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation) and EMS (Electronic Muscle Stimulator) Unit work?

Electrodes are placed on or near the area of pain. Soothing mild electric pulses are sent via the electrodes through the skin and along the nerve fibers. The pulses (controlled by the user at all times) suppress pain signals to the brain. TENS and EMS Machines also encourage the body to produce higher levels of its own natural pain killing chemicals called Endorphins and Encephalins. In simple terms TENS and EMS units are pain relief devices and have been known to eliminate pain for a short period of time, depending on the patient.

TENS have been known, over time, to actually reverse the pain problem. TENS have been used for many years by Medical Doctors, Chiropractors, Physical Therapists and other health professionals.

EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation, which is used to prevent, or reduce, muscle atrophy. Atrophy is the weakening and loss of muscle tone, which is usually experienced after surgeries or injuries. EMS has been proven to be an effective means of preventing muscle atrophy. EMS also helps by increasing blood flow to muscles, increasing range of motion, increasing muscle strength, as well as enhancing muscle endurance. EMS has pain management attributes in helping muscle related pain, such as a spastic muscle, sore muscles, or tight muscles. EMS units can also be used as a pain relief device. The main difference is the signal will penetrate deeper than a TENS unit.
