TENS, EMS and IFC pain relief units use electrical frequencies to help relieve pain from injuries.
TENS pain relief units use electrical frequencies to help relieve several types of pain, without drugs or harmful side effects. Over time, they have been shown to actually reverse some pain problems. They've been used for years by medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists and other health professionals.
If you have back pain, shoulder pain, arm and wrist pain, ankle pain, leg pain or neck pain, a TENS unit may help relieve that pain and stress without heavy duty painkillers or over the counter pain medications. If you can avoid taking painkillers, you'll feel better, avoid becoming dependent, and your body won't grow used to the pills, making them ineffective if you really need them later.
How do TENS units work?
With a TENS unit (Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation), you are using very low electrical currents to control pain. Electrodes are placed on or near the region where you are feeling pain. Soothing mild electric pulses are sent through the electrodes through the skin and along the nerve fibers. The pulses, which you control at all times, suppress pain signals to the brain. TENS units use low frequencies (60 to 200 Hz).
TENS units also encourage the body to produce higher levels of its own natural pain killing chemicals - Endorphins and Encephalins. TENS can grant a patient welcome short term pain relief or for longer periods of time depending on the person and the injury.
What are EMS units?
EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation, which is used to prevent, or reduce, muscle atrophy. Atrophy is the weakening and loss of muscle tone, which is usually experienced after surgeries or injuries. EMS has been proven to be an effective means of preventing muscle atrophy. EMS also helps by increasing blood flow to muscles, increasing range of motion, increasing muscle strength, as well as enhancing muscle endurance. EMS has pain management attributes in helping muscle related pain, such as a spastic muscle, sore muscles, or tight muscles. EMS units can also be used as a pain relief device. The main difference is the signal will penetrate deeper than a TENS unit. EMS units frequency is above 200 Hz.
What is an IFC unit?
Interferential current is essentially a deeper form of TENS. In essence, IFC modulates a high frequency (4000 Hz) carrier waveform with the same signal produced by a TENS unit. The high frequency carrier waveform penetrates the skin more deeply than a regular TENS unit, with less user discomfort for a given level of stimulation. Deep in the tissues, the carrier waveform is cancelled out, resulting in a TENS-like signal deep under the skin. The most common use of IFC is to relieve pain, reduce swelling, speed the healing of wounds and fractures, and restore function associated with muscle weakness.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that the IFC units may be useful for patients who have not had relief from TENS.

Please consult a licensed medical professional for medical advice before using these products. We suggest that these units be used only by prescription and under the supervision of a licensed physician. Electrical stimulation devices are contraindicated in persons using a cardiac pacemaker, in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, malignancy, and various conditions where circulation is impaired. It may not be used transcerebrally across the head, over the carotid sinus (where the jaw meets the neck), over metal implants or in conjunction with sleep apnea or heart monitors. You should be aware that TENS/EMS units provide symptomatic therapy only and are not considered curative. Promolife assumes no liability for medical problems resulting from use of these units. Please consult your physician about the use of a TENS or EMS unit for your condition.
