The Opto Pulse 100 offers microcurrent stimulation for Macular Degeneration and can provide measurable improvement in visual acuity.
Evidence of the effectiveness of
microcurrent stimulation for the treatment of
macular degeneration comes from basic research dating back two decades and strong anecdotal evidence supplied by healthcare professionals who have applied the technology as an "off label" use and are reporting measurable improvement in visual acuity.
The Opto Pulse 100 was originally designed for pain control. It is now being prescribed "off-label" in the United States by health care professionals and is used world wide by individuals for the treatment of macular degeneration. Automated programming and a special head band make it easy for patients with poor vision to self-administer the treatments.
The Opto Pulse 100 has variable intensity controls, a programmed set of rotating output frequencies and audio cues to tell the user how the treatment is progressing and when it is complete. A convenient head band has been adapted to conveniently and comfortably stimulate the appropriate nerve points.
How the Opto Pulse 100 Microcurrent Stimulator works
Researchers speculate that microcurrents stimulate blood flow to the retina, thereby increasing the supply of vital nutrients and promoting the removal of harmful waste products at the cellular level. Others believe that photoreceptors in the macula are given a needed boost with the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a compound known to transport energy to cells.
Expectations
We know that it is not a cure and not everyone benefits. Results can be immediate or take months. The effects are temporary and require repeated treatments to maintain the benefits. Depending on the severity of other common eye disorders like cataracts, astigmatism, myopia and presbyopia, people with the "dry" form of macular degeneration seem to have the best results.
General Information
The Opto Pulse 100 is a multi-frequency pulse generator designed for pain control that produces a precise series of low level electrical impulses.
Using the Opto Plus 100
Lead wires connect the control unit (port one or two) to the headband. Rectangular shaped conductive pads (electrodes) snap into place on the opposite side. After cleaning your forehead with rubbing alcohol (or soap and water), position the headband so the electrodes just overlay the eyebrow area. If you connected the lead wire to port one on the control unit, click on the Channel 1 (CH1) dial and slowly advance it until you begin to feel a slight tingling sensation. The tingling sensation is harmless and should not exceed your comfort zone. Typical settings are between two and three, depending on skin resistance.
About the time you begin to feel the tingling, you will begin to see a flickering light in both eyes. Once you see the flickering it is not necessary to increase the dial setting. The Opto Pulse 100 will automatically cycle through a series of pulse rates for approximately six minutes, beeping each time it changes frequency. When the treatment is complete the unit will beep six times and the flickering will stop. You may now turn the unit off.
NOTE: Individuals with a history of epilepsy, head injury, seizures, stroke, heart rate irregularities, kidney failure, pacemaker or any electrolyte abnormalities such as high or low blood potassium levels should check with their doctors before using microcurrent stimulation.
