70% of all adults over 30 years of age have enlarged hemorrhoid pads. Nevertheless, not all of them have any discomfort. Exact figures of people affected by hemorrhoid complaints are not available as this illness is still kept secret in our modern society. Even if this ailment was previously widespread, a sedentary way of life, being overweight, a diet which is low in roughage and intense pressing when passing a stool all increase the risk of hemorrhoid complaints.

What are hemorrhoids?

Everyone has a hemorrhoid pad which ensures that the anus closes tightly. This pad is made up of an Arteriovenus vascular system. If conditions are unfavorable, nodules develop which are commonly known as "piles." These enlarged nodules are not only detrimental to the anal sphincter but also lead to painful associated complaints. The ailment is divided into four different stages depending on the size of the nodules.

If there is "only" pain during and after passing stools this is known as 1st degree hemorrhoids. In 2nd degree hemorrhoids the nodules are already so large that they protrude when passing stools but are retracted automatically into the colon immediately after. 2nd degree hemorrhoids are as large as cherry stones.

1st degree and 2nd degree hemorrhoids are also referred to as "internal hemorrhoids" as the nodules ultimately stay in the colon without any treatment. By comparison, the so called "external hemorrhoids" are not spontaneously retracted. 3rd degree hemorrhoids can only be pushed back into the colon by hand. It is not possible to reposition 4th degree hemorrhoids at all.

The Delwa-Star H&P Eco Therm device operates by heating hemorrhoids with a heated applicator inserted into the rectum. It works on the pulsating heat principle and brings significant relief to 1st and 2nd degree hemorrhoids.

The Eco Therm can be used simply and easily by the patient in the comfort of his or her own home. The therapy probe emits pulsating warmth which stimulates the blood flow through the hemorrhoid pad, which in turn results in an increased metabolic rate and a definite shrinkage of the hemorrhoids.

The therapy probe, which is shaped like a suppository, is inserted into the rectum for a duration of 20 minutes. The most comfortable temperature for the user (between 97-113F) can be selected via the knob on the control unit. Even if an improvement is obvious after a few days, the therapy should be continued twice daily for a period of 30 days.

Most patients find the Eco Therm therapy comfortable and agreeable. It is IKS/FDA-controlled and is fitted with all required safety systems. This means that the device cannot be directly connected to a plug socket. A box which is used for both charging the built-in batteries and for operating the therapy probe means that charging the batteries and the treatment cannot take place simultaneously. The Eco Therm switches off automatically after 20 minutes which effectively prevents overheating.

It has proven itself to be a sensible alternative to other forms of therapy as there are no detrimental side effects and it is very easy to operate.
