Ayurveda, also known as "The Science of Life," is a system of medicine with origins in India. It is a form of alternative medicine in many parts of the world. It remains very influential in South Asia.  In the western world it is considered a complimentary and alternative medicine, especially in the use of herbs, massage and Yoga.
 

What exactly is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda emphasizes prevention and health maintenance by paying attention to balance, diet, herbs, lifestyle and right thinking.  By using Ayurveda, you  should come to understand how to create balance in your body and mind and how to change certain habits in order to maintain that balance.

Every person has a unique pattern of energy that can become easily unbalanced by a wide variety of factors, both internal and external.  Emotions, stress, diet, trauma, the seasons, weather, relationships and work can all mess with balance.  Balance and order can bring about greater health.

In Ayurveda, there are three basic principles working in the body, called vata, pitta and kapha (because there is no suitable English translation).  Vata relates to the energy of movement, pitta is the energy of digestion and metabolism and kapha is the energy of structure and lubrication.  Understanding these and working to balance them is the focus of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is not a replacement for regular medicine, because some illnesses may require traditional methods.  Rather, Ayurveda can be used in conjunction with traditional medicine to make you stronger (and therefore less likely to be impacted by disease) and rebuild your body after you've been treated with drugs or surgery.
