Magnetic water softeners suspend minerals with a magnetic charge so they can't stick to pipes and water tanks - you won't need salt or potassium.  If you already have buildup, magnets will clean it out.  They are widely used to stop scale buildup in industry.

Scale causes billions of dollars of damage to water systems and can be seen as hard white deposits in shower heads, faucets, tubs, toilets, coffee makers, ice makers and other places. 

Two types of magnetic softeners are used.  Electronic Water Softeners need to be connected to electric currents while permanent magnets do not.
