Why would I want to remove fluoride?

Fluoride is in widespread use in communities across the country and has been declared healthy to benefit the aluminum and dental industries and our nuclear weapons program.  In 1936, the American Dental Association stated that 1ppm of fluoride can be as negative as lead and arsenic.  In 1944 they states that 1.2ppm can cause developmental problems, saying, "the potentialities for harm outweigh those for good."  Which is correct?

One version of fluoride is natural and appears in your bones and teeth.  As long as a natural balance exists between the fluoride and your natural enamel production, you're ok, but if you end up with two much natural fluoride, it starts causing de-mineralization that leads to cavities.  Teens in the USA using fluoridated water had more cavities in a study than children in South Africa who were exposed to only low levels of natural fluoride.  So even natural fluoride can cause problems, but natural fluoride is not what we have floating in our water.

There are a few types of fluoride that appear in our water but the most common are sodium silicofluoride and hydrofluorosilicic acid.  These are byproducts of steel, cement, aluminum and nuclear weapons processing.  There are no health benefits to either but plenty of evidence that they are harmful.  The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health warns of heart, bone, kidney, teeth and gastrointestinal problems, and fluoride toxicity has been shown to be part of the cause of teeth pitting, hyperactivity, arthritis, a disrupted immune system, lower IQ and lower thyroid function.  It also helps accelerate aging and genetic cell damage.

Because fluoride also appears in some foods, drinks, some instant teas, mechanically deboned meats, pesticides and soy baby formulas and some pharmaceuticals, it's important to reduce our exposure where we can.

How do I remove fluoride?

There are three primary ways to effectively remove fluoride from your water:  Bone Char or Brimac, Reverse Osmosis and Steam Distillation.  You can find more information on Steam and Reverse Osmosis by clicking the links.  On this page we'll show you about the method we most recommend:  Bone Char.  But first, a quick warning:

There is a filter media called Alumina that we DO NOT recommend and do not sell.  If your water's chemistry is not just right, aluminum can leach into the water.  Alumina has a poor shelf life and won't remove chlorine, pesticides or THM.
 

What is Bone Char?

Bone char is made of charred animal bone - bovine (cow) bones are taken from cold storage, thoroughly cleaned and put in sun and rain for at least 90 days and totally dried.  It is then carbonized at 1472 degrees Fahrenheit in controlled conditions.  The result is Kosher Certified, 100% organic bone char made of 80% phosphate of calcium, 10% carbon and 10% calcium carbonate.  It lasts a long time, has no toxicity and leaves behind beneficial minerals.  There is no pH effect and it can remove chlorine, heavy metals and radioactive isotopes on top of fluoride. Bone char is considered a more effective contaminate remover than coconut because it is hundreds of times more porous.

Fluoride removal requires greater contact time for its removal as it is considered a dissolved solid rather than a mineral. This is why we recommend multi-stage bone char filter systems.

Water needs contact time for bone char to thoroughly remove contaminates, so we recommend four stage filters.  Two stage systems will remove about 50%, three stage systems will remove about 75% and four stage systems remove about 95% based on a 1.5ppm fluoride level.

How long does bone char last?

Point of use systems can filter about 5,000 gallons of water and whole house systems can do up to about 100,000 gallons.  This can vary depending on your fluoride levels but for normal use for an average family of four, you should be able to only need to change your filters once a year.

What is Brimac and how it is better than bone char?

Brimac is bone char, it's as simple as that.  The only difference is that Brimac has been put through an NSF61 Certification. NSF61 ensures that these products do not contribute contaminants to drinking water that could cause adverse health effects.  If certification is necessary or important to you, you can upgrade to Brimac on any of our systems.

Carbon Block, or Activated Charcoal

Activated carbon is produced from charred coconut shells, pulverized into the consistency of course flour and pressed into a block.  Water is pushed through the block, filtering particles as small as 0.5 microns.  The carbon essentially polishes the water molecules while leaving behind organic materials, pesticides, viruses, bacteria and cysts as well as bad odors, bad tastes, giardia, cryptosporidium and asbestos.  It is best used with treated municipal water and is often used in tandem with reverse osmosis, steam distillation, ozone and ultraviolet water systems.  It will not take minerals out of the water.

Carbon, or GAC (Granular Activated Charcoal)

GAC works like carbon block except the pieces of carbon are much larger.  GAC is very good at eliminating bad odors and tastes.  This will get rid of most contaminates btu isn't as effective at removing sub-micron particles.  It's ideal as a post filter and doesn't remove minerals.  Often used in tandem with other systems.

Kinetic Degradation Fluxion, or KDF

KDF is patented and proven to remove chloramine, chlorine, bacteria, iron, fungus, algae, hydrogen sulfide, most heavy metals and other contaminates.  KDF is brass, made of 50% pure copper and 50% pure zinc.  In water this produces an electro-chemical reaction that converts free chlorine into simple chlorides.  Some of the harmful components are changes into harmless ones.   KDF will remove more than 95% of chlorine before it hits your carbon filter, extending the life of the carbon by 15 times and letting it focus on other pollutants.  The electrolytic field inhibits microorganisms and forms peroxide and hydroxyl radicals.  KDF meets EPA and FDA standards for zinc and copper because the copper and zinc ions tend to reattach to the KDF media.  It doesn't remove minerals and is best used in tandem with carbon filters for truly effective filtration.
