ADHD risk may be tied to pesticide exposure before birth

Linda Carrol of MSNBC posted this:

” Children whose mothers were exposed to widely-used pesticides such as malathion during pregnancy may be at increased risk of developing an attention disorder by age 5, a new study shows.

Researchers found that the risk of attention disorders rose with increasing levels of metabolites — substances created when pesticides break down — measured in a pregnant woman’s urine. For each tenfold increase in pesticide metabolites in a mom’s system, the risk of an attention disorder rose fivefold in her child, according to the report published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

The study results fall in line with a report published earlier this year by Harvard researchers who found that school-aged children exposed to organophosphates, one o...

Antihistamine use linked to extra pounds

From Reuters Health:

“People who use prescription antihistamines to relieve allergy symptoms may be more likely than non-users to carry excess pounds, a new study suggests, although the significance of the connection is not yet clear.

In a study of 867 U.S. adults, researchers at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, found that prescription antihistamine users were more likely to be overweight or obese than non-users were.

Among the 268 antihistamine users, 45 percent were overweight, versus 30 percent of the 599 study participants not on the medications.”

Scientists create liver cells from patients’ skin

Reuters posted this. Here’s an excerpt followed by the link:

“Scientists have created liver cells in a lab for the first time using reprogrammed cells from human skin, paving the way for the potential development of new treatments for liver diseases that kill thousands each year.

Cambridge University scientists who reported their results in the Journal of Clinical Investigation on Wednesday, said they also found a way of avoiding the kind of intense political and ethical rows over embryonic stem cells which are currently hampering work in the United States.”

Lab-created corneas used to restore vision

MSNBC posted this story this morning. Would like to hear your thoughts. Here’s an excerpt, followed by the link:

“Scientists have created a new kind of artificial cornea, inserting a sliver of collagen into the eye that coaxes its own natural corneal cells to regrow and restore vision.

It worked in a first-stage study of 10 patients in Sweden, researchers reported Wednesday. And while larger studies are needed, it’s a step toward developing an alternative to standard cornea transplants that aren’t available in much of the world because of a shortage of donated corneas.”

Finally, a nice cool morning

We know we’re not the only ones who’ve been sweltering lately, but it has been hot. Way hotter than we like. This morning it was 60 degrees when I woke up, and only 68 right now. Very nice to throw the windows open and enjoy the unique Promolife experience. Being out in the country with deer and rolling hills, clear skies and the sound of the wind in the trees is definitely something to be appreciated.

And we do. Hope you’re having a good morning too.
