MSNBC posted this story this morning. Would like to hear your thoughts. Here’s an excerpt, followed by the link:

“Scientists have created a new kind of artificial cornea, inserting a sliver of collagen into the eye that coaxes its own natural corneal cells to regrow and restore vision.

It worked in a first-stage study of 10 patients in Sweden, researchers reported Wednesday. And while larger studies are needed, it’s a step toward developing an alternative to standard cornea transplants that aren’t available in much of the world because of a shortage of donated corneas.”

More pesticides on produce…

Posted by Promolife On June - 1 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

CNN posted an article today called ‘Dirty dozen’ produce carries more pesticide residue, group says. Here’s an excerpt and link. If you’re interested in sanitizing your food safely, check out the links below the excerpt.

If you’re eating non-organic celery today, you may be ingesting 67 pesticides with it, according to a new report from the Environmental Working Group.

The group, a nonprofit focused on public health, scoured nearly 100,000 produce pesticide reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to determine what fruits and vegetables we eat have the highest, and lowest, amounts of chemical residue.

Most alarming are the fruits and vegetables dubbed the “Dirty Dozen,” which contain 47 to 67 pesticides per serving. These foods are believed to be most susceptible because they have soft skin that tends to absorb more pesticides.

Some food sanitizers are available that can kill bacteria and pesticides before you eat them: Vege Kleen, Samson Multi Purpose Washer, Nature Kleen, Lotus Sanitation System, Citro-Bio Non Toxic Sanitizer.

ADHD linked to pesticide exposure

Posted by Promolife On May - 17 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

CNN.com reported today about a study showing higher rates of ADHD in children routinely subjected to pesticides, especially on food. Here’s some excerpts followed by a link to the full thing.

Children exposed to higher levels of a type of pesticide found in trace amounts on commercially grown fruit and vegetables are more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder than children with less exposure, a nationwide study suggests.

And later….

Detectable levels of pesticides are present in a large number of fruits and vegetables sold in the U.S., according to a 2008 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited in the study. In a representative sample of produce tested by the agency, 28 percent of frozen blueberries, 20 percent of celery, and 25 percent of strawberries contained traces of one type of organophosphate. Other types of organophosphates were found in 27 percent of green beans, 17 percent of peaches, and 8 percent of broccoli.

Here’s the link: CNN.com. If you’re concerned about pesticides on foods, you can safely use ozone to kill the invaders before your child ever eats them. Some examples include: Vege-Kleen, Samson Multi-Purpose Washer, Nature Kleen, the Lotus Sanitizing System, and Citro-Bio Non Toxic Food Sanitizers.

Health.com posted a slideshow of the 10 worst plants for allergy sufferers. Below is an excerpt followed by the link to the full article:

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, doesn’t have anything to do with a fever, or hay for that matter.

Instead, the watery eyes and stuffy nose are most often due to pollen from the beautiful plants and trees gracing your yard or neighborhood. (The condition was so named because it was discovered during haying season, when its symptoms were most present.)

Warren V. Filley, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, gave us the lowdown on some of the most common allergy-causing plants and trees, and how to spot them.

8 Natural Remedies That May Help You Sleep

Posted by Promolife On May - 6 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

From AOLHealth today:

If sleep has plunged to the bottom of your to-do list, you’re not alone. Although the National Sleep Foundation recommends getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night, the average American logs only six hours and 40 minutes. What gives? Blame crazy schedules and, of course, sleeping woes. Before you rush to the drugstore to buy an over-the-counter (OTC) sleep medication, try one of the following natural sleep remedies. “These are safer and have fewer side effects than OTC medications,” says Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of From Fatigued to Fantastic and medical director of the national Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers. Many of these can not only help you fall asleep and stay asleep, but they may also promote muscle relaxation.

10 Food Rules For Pain Patients

Posted by Promolife On May - 6 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

CNN posted 10 Food Rules For Pain Patients.  Below is an excerpt and then a link to the full thing.

Fibromyalgia is notoriously difficult to treat. Medication tends to reduce muscle pain, fatigue, and other symptoms of the chronic condition by just 30% to 50%. As a result, many patients turn to diet and lifestyle changes for added relief.

Learning which foods to avoid is a good place to start, since fibro patients often have food sensitivities that may not show up in food allergy tests. In one survey, 42% reported that certain foods made their pain and stiffness worse.
